Kombucha Kenya

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about our probiotic kombucha and kefir — from what they are to how they reach your door.

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a lightly sparkling, fermented tea rich in probiotics — the live bacteria and yeast that support a healthy gut. At Kombucha Kenya we brew ours in small batches right here in Nairobi, using real tea and natural flavours, with no artificial additives.

What is kefir, and how is it different from kombucha?

Kefir is a fermented, probiotic-rich drink made from cultured milk or water. Milk kefir is creamy and tangy, like a drinkable yoghurt, while water kefir is a light, fizzy, dairy-free alternative to soda. Kombucha, by contrast, is fermented tea. All three are packed with live cultures and made locally.

Is kombucha alcoholic?

Fermentation naturally produces a tiny amount of alcohol, but through our strict quality control, our kombucha is at 0% ABV, which classes it as a non-alcoholic beverage suitable for all ages.

Is your kombucha or kefir high in sugar?

No. In both kombucha and kefir, sugar is the food the cultures feed on during fermentation, so most of it is consumed in the process, leaving a low-sugar, probiotic drink with real flavour rather than added sweetness. Sweetness comes from the natural fruit and plant flavours we use, not from added sugar.

Is milk kefir suitable for people who are lactose-intolerant?

Often, yes. Fermentation breaks down most of the lactose in milk kefir, so many lactose-intolerant people enjoy it comfortably. If you prefer to avoid dairy entirely, choose our water kefir or our plant-based coconut and almond kefir.

Do you have vegan or dairy-free options?

Yes. Our water kefir and our plant-based line — coconut and almond kefir — are completely dairy-free and vegan-friendly.

What are the health benefits of probiotic drinks?

Live probiotic cultures are widely enjoyed for supporting digestion, gut balance, and general wellness. Our drinks are naturally fermented and unpasteurised, so those live cultures stay active. They are a food, not a medicine, so for specific health conditions please talk to your doctor.

Where do you deliver, and how do I order?

You can shop online any time at shop.kombuchakenya.co.ke, with delivery available across Kenya and a focus on Nairobi. You can also collect your order from us. At checkout you simply choose delivery or pickup. If you reside in a different county, we can ship to you via your preferred parcel delivery or courier service.

How should I store my drinks, and how long do they last?

Keep all our drinks refrigerated. Milk Kefir is best enjoyed fresh, within about 3-4 weeks @ 5°C, Water kefir lasts 3 months @ 5°C, whereas Kombucha lasts between 2-6 months for fruit flavors and for herbal infusions respectively @ 5°C. Because our products are unpasteurised and alive with cultures, cold storage keeps them at their best.

What sizes and packaging do you offer?

We offer a glass 'Conscious' range in single-serve sizes (330ml and 400ml), a plastic 'Big Value' range in larger 1L, 3L and 5L bottles, and wholesale crates for cafés, shops and events.

Do you take back glass bottles?

Yes. Our glass bottles are returnable. Returning your empties keeps them out of landfill and earns you rewards in the Kombucha Kenya Community. It is a core part of how we keep things sustainable.

What is the KKC community and how do rewards work?

The Kombucha Kenya Community (KKC) is our loyalty and community programme. You earn points and unlock badges as you order and return bottles, can refer friends for rewards, and track your recycling impact, first dibs on new products and exclusive content, all from your dashboard.

How can I pay?

We accept M-Pesa (you will get a prompt on your phone), card, and cash on delivery (Admin Triggered), so you can check out whichever way is easiest for you.
